Advance! 2022

Our inaugural “Mini-Con” took place on July 9, 2022 at the La Mesa Adult Enrichment Center.

Focused on miniature gaming, there were also several tournaments/group events and a Flea market. Thanks to the generosity of the sponsors listed below, a raffle was held with some AMAZING prizes!

  • Armageddon on the Indus

    9:00 - 12:00

    Gamemaster: Jeff Jonas Ruleset: Lion Rampant/Warhammer Ancients Scale: 28mm Max Players: 6

    Around 306 BC at the height of the wars of the Successors, Seleucus I attacked Chandragupta Maurya to contest control of the Indus river provinces. The details of this war are lost to history. This is a "what if" scenario pitting the Macedonian phalanx of the west vs. the elephants of the east.

    This game uses a hybrid system of Lion Rampant combined with the venerable Warhammer Ancients to create a fast play multi-player experience.

  • English Civil War - "Take our cattel, be assured we will battel!"

    An ongoing naval battle throughout the period with a separate demo table to get you up and running in Condition Zebra at Battle Stations in no time at all!

  • The Battle of Mobile Bay

    9:00 - Game Completion (will likely extend into the afternoon session)

    Gamemaster: Steve Thorne Ruleset: Sail & Steam Navies Scale: 1:600 Max Players: 12

    Run past Ft. Morgan to attack the Rebel fleet, or command a Rebel gunboat, ironclad, or one of three sections of Ft. Morgan. “Damn the torpedoes!” rulesheet should allow players to show up and get to it after a short briefing. Prizes!

    Players are urged to look over the rules and associated game documents prior to the game in order to speed up play, but it is not a requirement. They can all be found at this link:

    Roman-era gladiatorial combat in 28mm. Quick and furious rules, you learn them in les than 10 minutes so as to get you into the arena quicker! Matches are normally 20 minutes or less! Hear the roar of the crowd as you meet new and interesting people from all over the empire, and then attempt to defreat them in single or group combat! Who will earn the rudius and their freedom? And who will get the “thumbs down” from the Emperor????

    June 18, 1815 - while Napoleon tries to crush the Anglo-Allied army at Waterloo, a Prussian corps attempts to prevent Grouchy from reinforcing his boss. Beautiful custom built terrain board!

  • Operation Goodwood

    Gamemaster: Brett Lynam Ruleset: What a Tanker! Scale: 20mm Max Players: 8

    During Operation Goodwood the British launched a tank assault against German opposition on the area south of Caen. The operation failed. But then they didn’t have YOU did they?

    What a Tanker by Too Fat Lardies is an easy to learn, quick to play tank game with each player controlling a single tank. Try to destroy as many enemy tanks as possible while staying alive. Did you screw up and brew up? No worries, grab another tank and get back into the fight!

    Everything needed to play is provided. No experience necessary!

  • North Africa Mini-Tournament (FoW)

    We will be doing a small 3 round “tournament” for Flames of War! This will be using the fourth (edit) edition mid war factions, so get ready to fight it out in North Africa. This will be 105 points, all armies should be fully painted. While there will be winners, we like to keep things relaxed and hope folks just enjoy playing three games in a day.

  • HMGS-PSW DBA 3.0 World Tournament

    Gamemaster: Harry Dudrow Ruleset: DBA 3.0 Scale: 15mm Max Players: 1 per game

    Harry Dudrow is a Director of the HMGS-PSW and a skilled DBA player. He won the 2021 Society of Ancients Wargames Championship. This is a rare occasion for someone outside of Great Britain. Harry will be present at Advance! 2022 to defend his title against all players. It would be an incredible bonus if those players were also Society of Ancients members so the games could be registered as official contests.

  • Islandlwana (Zululand, South Africa) 1879

    1:00 - 5:00

    Gamemaster: Philip Chiu Ruleset: Battles for Empires (2nd Edition) Scale: 28mm Max Players: 6

    One of the most famous battles in British history, where a force of 1,000+ British soldiers were defeated by a large force of 20,000+ Zulus. Despite being supported by artillery and cavalry, the British forces wer overwhelmed and the entire camp overrun. Lord Chelmsford, who was away from the camp a few miles away with another British force at the same time, had to retreat back into Natal. The British mad a lot of mistakes in this battle. Will you be able to do better?

  • Battle of Wake Island

    Determined to rout the rebel colonists, the British launch a strong punitive raid across southern New Jersey. The initial opposition is limited to local Colonial militia, but Washington’s Continentals are on the way.

    As the wars of Napoleon ravage Europe, chaos and fear reign and the darkness that once clung to the shadows has been emboldened. Most people dismiss reports of supernatural activity as the rantings of madmen or the lies of deserters, but a few know better. Players will lead their team of investigators and soldiers in a nightmarish scenario that will test their sanity in this skirmish game of Napoleonic horror by Joseph McCullough!

  • In the Company of Eagles (WW1 Dogfighting)

    Gamemaster: Dan Cramer Ruleset: Blue Max Scale: 1/144 Max Players: 15

    WWI air combat using Blue Max miniatures rules. There will be a quick flying lesson before the bullets start flying. This will be a mid war game with iconic machines of the time. Good performance, lots of damage, and plenty of kills. There will be a mechanism for players to cycle back in after an unfortunate early game aircraft loss. To continue with a longstanding SDHMWG tradition, wear a bit of aviator costume and get a free re-roll. once during the game.

  • The Incident at Crater Plato/Prospecting in the Sea of Nectar

    July 20, 1969, 3:17PM EDT. The world watched in wonder as the first man stepped foot on the moon…. Alexei Leonov. In this alt-history game of “what if the USSR had beaten the USA to the Moon”, players will take a squad of either US, USSR, ROC, or Corporate astronauts and attempt to mine resources in a competitive lunar atmosphere. The battle over the Moon and its riches has only just begun….

  • Battle of the Virginia Capes

    6:00 - 8:00

    Gamemaster: Kevin Smith Ruleset: Grand Fleet Actions in the Age of Sail Scale: 1/1200 Max Players: 8

    A representation of the Battle of the Virginia Capes 5 September 1781. The British fleet under Sir Thomas Graves must drive away the French under de Grasse from the entrance to the Chesapeake Bay in order to re-establish communications and supply with Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.

    Forces will be scaled down while maintaining the relative strengths of the fleets. Players are in the role of squadron commanders, maneuvering several ships of the line. These are the same rules which are routinely played at the club’s Tuesday night games.
